Optimized Brain Reading

The project Optimized Brain Reading uses a patented method that tries to solve one of the major diagnostic challenges in the western world - a safe, simple, noninvasive diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease at an early stage. Such a solution will have a major social impact.

Currently the biggest challenge for the Optimized Brain Reading software is a very heavy image analysis, which takes up to 3 hours per MR- brain scanning. This makes the software difficult to apply in daily routines because it forces the end user to use the software on very high performance, and thus expensive servers.

Based on experiences from previous projects, the assessment of experts at the Department of Computer Science Aarhus University is that the analysis time can be reduced significantly by using parallelized algorithms (called Horn / Schunk and Cornelius & Kanade) on a GPU (Graphics card Processor Unit).

The project will test this hypothesis, and if so implement a prototype of a solution, so that the company can be helped to exploit the full potential of this diagnostic method. Thus a solution to the optimization problem is critical for the further development and success of the company.

The applied research techniques are well-know but put to use in a new context. In addition the solution to the optimization problem will enable further research of the methods clinical and societal impact.

The project is completed.
